Conference Information

  1. Session title and presenter name
    - Participatory Learning Systems that Promote a Culture of Sustained Learning by Todd Fishburn
    - Web 2.0 by Todd Fishburn
    - Free Mulitmedia Resources You Can Use to Differentiate Instruction by Karen Fashimpaur K12 Handhelds
    - Blogging 101 by Susan Roustan
  2. From this session, what information made a lasting impression?
The largest impression made upon me at the Handheld conference was Web 2.0. Online communication and collaboration holds incredible promise within the context of education - for both teachers and students.
  3. How will you use this information as a teacher? (Productivity tool? Instructional tool?)
As a TRT, I have used Web 2.0 tools for purposes of productivity and instruction. I've started a wikispace (http://heathermcc.wikispaces.com/) and blog (http://heathermcc.edublogs.org/) I use to post training materials. I've recently been working with a high school teacher to set up a research-based blog. We introduce it to the students on 12/4. Wish me luck! (//http://chipnewcome.edublogs.org///)
  4. How will your students use this information? (What kind of learning activity?)
The high school students I mention above will be using edublogs to conduct research. Each post will be equivalent to a 3x5 note card. Students will also be able to collaborate with one another. With an Internet connection, students will be able to perform research at school or home. All research notes will be contained in one virtual place. Because all research is contained in one place, we hope the students are more successful at managing their research. We also hope the process of evaluating student progress is more manageable for the teacher.
  5. What kind of product will be produced from this type of educational handheld activity?
This is not a handheld activity. There will be 2 products: the research posted on the blog and the research paper.
  6. How will you assess the student-created product?
Students' blogging and research paper will be assessed through a rubric.
  7. What roadblocks are currently in place that would prevent you from doing this in your classroom?
The biggest road block so far has been getting student blog accounts established because of the need to have an email account. I'll let you know what else rears its head.
